22 March 2007, 'Remnants of Fear' Play |

Dubbeljoint to produce Gary Mitchell’s new play this Winter… Gary Mitchell the renowned Belfast playwright whose family was forced to flee their home in Glengormley writes his first play since that event. The play “Remnants of Fear” is a chilling indictment of how paramilitaries are manipulating and corrupting protestant communities. Dubbeljoint Theatre Company are proud to be producing such an important play on the current state of Belfast. We feel, along with many others that it is outrageous that attempts have been made to silence a writer. Dubbeljoint’s ethos as a Theatre Company is to produce cutting edge and provocative theatre that many other theatre company’s shy away from. Gary Mitchell’s work in the past has explored the dark world of loyalism. “Remnants Of Fear” explores the life of one family, where a young man comes under intense pressure to become part of a loyalist organisation. His father, uncle and grandmother fight each other for the young mans future. With superb wit and great detail Gary Mitchell paints a frighteningly realistic picture. Eileen Pollock and Gerry Doherty star alongside two talented young actors Bryan Steenson and Sam Murdock who are making their first professional debut on stage. Pam Brighton discovered Gary Mitchell in 1990 when he wrote his first radio play, which won a BBC Radio 4 Young Playwrights Festival Award, and in 1995 he became the first person from Northern Ireland to win the Stewart Parker award. Since then Gary has went on to win numerous awards for plays such as In A Little World Of Our Own, Sinking, Trust and The Force Of Change. Pam and Gary are delighted to be working together on this fantastic new play. Gary Mitchell received the prestigious Andersonstown News Group Ashling Award for the Arts 2006 for this play.

09 March 2007, "Edge of the Pale" Book Launch |

Local lady, Maureen Kieran has just published a book on the locale entitled ‘The Edge of the Pale’ and is holding a book launch on Friday 9th March. “…In South Armagh the winter of 1689-90 was likely to be remembered for a long time. Frost and snow started in November and by the 24th March snow still clung to the top of Slieve Gullion- an ever present sign of more to come. Martha Owen pulled a skimpy shawl round her thin shoulders and tightened the threadbare bonnet when a sharp and strong gust of wind caught her off guard. Elizabeth moved to the edge of the grass and in the tradition of women since time began, waved the soldiers goodbye and safe journey...” All are invited to help her celebrate her success on the evening. Please come along

20 October 2006, Michael Davitt Evening by Donal Maguire |

Friday October 20th we are delighted to present Donal Maguire to Tí Chulainn. He will be reciting the life of Michael Davitt through stories and song. “One Man Show by Donal MaguireMichael Davitt: The Forgotten Hero? Avondale, 16 August 2006"Donal Maguire’s one man show on the life of Michael Davitt proved the highlight of this year’s Parnell Summer School and a fitting tribute to Michael Davitt. Never underestimate the power of song! More than all the academic lectures, Maguire’s selection of original songs and ballads brought a forgotten hero to life."A capacity audience was held spell-bound as Maguire traced the life and times of Davitt in song and story, words and music. Whether singing unaccompanied or accompany himself on guitar or mandolin, Maguire commanded total attention as he recreated the lost experience of eviction, emigration and hard-ship. The programme included songs of land and labour, love and politics from the Irish and English folk-tradition, all rendered with a gusto and passion."Maguire is an outstanding singer and musician. His performance was greeted with a well-deserved standing ovation. If you get the chance to hear him, take it. If you have heard him already, hear him again."Pauric Travers Academic Director Parnell Summer School”Log onto www.donalmaguire.co.uk for more reviews and details on the artist
